Sharks Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Friday, September 03, 2010
So much for general manager Doug Wilson's insistence that the Sharks would be just fine with a goaltending tandem of newcomer Antero Niittymaki and their backup last season, Thomas Greiss. In a classic case of "If you can't beat him, sign him," the Sharks grabbed Antti Niemi, the Chicago Blackhawks' goalie on their run to the Stanley Cup, for the relatively inexpensive price of $2 million for one year.Niemi had been awarded a $2.75 million salary by an arbitrator, and the Blackhawks—beset by salary cap woes—let him leave as a free agent rather than pay that amount.Suddenly, the Sharks are overloaded with netminders, and barring injury one of them will have to play in the minor leagues or go elsewhere.
